Common Issues During Winter Months

What is ICE DAMMING?

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow and water from draining off the roof. The inside temperature of heating a home will rise up through the roof causing thawing under the snow. As the water runs down the roof and reaches the exposed edge of the roof, the water will naturally refreeze, causing a damming effect. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into your home and cause damage interior damage. When the water leaks into the walls the only place for it to come out is around an opening, such as a window or door.

Why are ICICLES forming on my GutterMONSTER?

The inside temperature of heating a home will rise up through the roof causing thawing under the snow. Water will run down the roof and over top the gutter protection system. GutterMONSTER is made from aluminum which has metal properties that will stay colder than the roof. The most exposed part of the top cap is the bull nose which is the furthest away from the home and is at the coldest point of the system. As the water runs down the roof and over the bull nose of the top cap with outside temperatures hovering around 32°, the water will naturally form icicles - NOT ice dams. Icicles are a good thing! The ice that forms is now positioned away from the home and not lodged in the gutters causing various forms of expensive damage. Icicles are visible evidence that water is being pulled away from you home, not into it!

Why is there CONDENSATION on my windows?

Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. When warm air meets a cold surface, water can condense and settle. This may cause water droplets to collect on the glass in your windows. Your insulated and air tight SL2700 does not allow air to circulate around it, preventing the water droplets from evaporating.
